Frequently Asked Questions
PERSPEX® is a premium brand of acrylic sheet made from polymethyl methacrylate, commonly known as PMMA. It is valued for its outstanding optical clarity, smooth surface, colour consistency, weather resistance and ease of fabrication.
Clear PERSPEX® cast acrylic can transmit more than 92% of visible light, providing exceptional transparency with very little colour distortion. It is suitable for signage, displays, architectural features, glazing, lighting, furniture and many other applications. Learn more about PERSPEX® Clear Cast.
PERSPEX® is acrylic, but not every acrylic sheet is PERSPEX®.
“Acrylic” is the generic name used for PMMA material. PERSPEX® is a registered brand of acrylic manufactured to controlled quality and performance standards. Different acrylic manufacturers may use different raw materials, production methods and quality-control processes, so clarity, colour consistency, thickness tolerance, fabrication performance and outdoor durability can vary between brands and grades.
All three terms are related, but they do not mean exactly the same thing:
- Acrylic is the generic material, chemically known as PMMA.
- PERSPEX® is a British brand of premium acrylic sheet, registered by ICI in 1934.
- PLEXIGLAS® is a separate German acrylic brand developed by Röhm and registered in 1933.
PERSPEX® and PLEXIGLAS® are therefore not different types of plastic—they are two established brands that manufacture products based on the same PMMA material. However, their available grades, colours, finishes, warranties and technical specifications may differ.
The correct product should always be selected by comparing the individual grade and datasheet, rather than relying on the brand name alone. Read the official PLEXIGLAS® product explanation.
PERSPEX® originated in the United Kingdom.
British research into methyl methacrylate polymers led to a patent application in 1931. The PERSPEX® name—derived from a Latin expression meaning “to see through”—was registered as a trademark by the British chemical company ICI on 16 November 1934.
Demand increased significantly during the Second World War, when PERSPEX® was used to manufacture aircraft cockpit canopies, including canopies for fighter aircraft. Production began at Darwen in Lancashire in 1940, and PERSPEX® acrylic continues to be manufactured in the United Kingdom.
Perspex International became part of the 3A Composites group following its acquisition by Schweiter Technologies in late 2018. Explore the official 90-year history of PERSPEX®.
The quality of the raw-material formulation and the manufacturing process can directly affect how an acrylic sheet looks, performs and fabricates.
A premium-quality acrylic product can provide:
- Excellent clarity with minimal colour tint
- Consistent colour between production batches
- A smooth, high-gloss surface
- Reliable machining, polishing and thermoforming
- Better-quality bonded and fabricated joints
- Reduced risk of visual contamination or surface defects
- Predictable UV and outdoor-weathering performance
- Greater confidence for demanding architectural and display projects
PERSPEX® is recognised as a premium acrylic brand because of its controlled formulation, manufacturing consistency, specialist product development and extensive selection of colours and finishes.
It is important to note that “premium” does not necessarily mean that every product contains only virgin resin. For example, PERSPEX®re is manufactured from 100% recycled MMA while maintaining the optical transparency, durability and UV stability expected from the brand. The exact grade and datasheet should be checked when recycled content or virgin material is a project requirement.
PERSPEX® offers much more than conventional clear acrylic. Its extensive range allows designers to combine transparency, colour, texture, lighting and functional performance.
Specialist options include:
- PERSPEX® Clear – outstanding transparency and a premium high-gloss finish
- PERSPEX® Frost and Satin – matt surfaces that help reduce glare and fingerprints
- PERSPEX® Colours and Tints – solid, translucent and transparent colours
- PERSPEX® Duo – two coloured layers in one sheet for creative engraving
- PERSPEX® Spectrum LED and Diffuse – designed for illuminated signs and lighting
- PERSPEX® Secret Sign – appears black during the day and reveals colour when illuminated
- PERSPEX® VE and VA – specialist UV-filtering grades for displays and sensitive exhibits
- PERSPEX® Naturals, Pearlescent, Sparkle and Metallics – decorative architectural and interior finishes
- PERSPEX®re – cast acrylic manufactured from 100% recycled MMA
Bespoke colour matching may also be available for projects requiring a corporate, architectural or brand-specific colour. Product availability and minimum production quantities vary. Explore the official PERSPEX® product range.
Architects and designers value PERSPEX® because it provides both creative freedom and dependable material performance.
It can be transparent, translucent or opaque and is offered in a wide selection of colours, textures and special effects. It can also be cut, CNC-machined, drilled, polished, engraved, bonded and thermoformed into complex shapes.
Other architectural advantages include:
- Approximately half the weight of glass of the same thickness
- More than 92% visible-light transmission for clear cast grades
- Excellent UV and weather resistance
- A premium, contemporary appearance
- Easier handling and installation than glass
- Good resistance to breakage compared with glass
- Options for light diffusion and LED illumination
- Bespoke colour-matching possibilities
- Suitability for both internal and external applications, depending on the grade
Typical uses include architectural signage, feature walls, decorative screens, lighting elements, interior partitions, display cases, furniture, retail fit-outs and selected glazing applications.
For regulated glazing, façades or other building applications, the exact grade must be assessed against the required fire, impact, structural and building-code requirements.
Most PERSPEX® cast acrylic ranges carry a 10-year external warranty against significant deterioration caused by outdoor weathering, subject to the selected grade, installation, fabrication and warranty conditions.
Because warranty conditions vary between products, always confirm the applicable datasheet and warranty before specifying the material. Review the official benefits of PERSPEX® cast acrylic.
Yes. Altius Polymers can supply PERSPEX® acrylic cut to your required dimensions, subject to sheet size and stock availability.
Depending on the project, we can also assist with:
- Rectangular and custom-shaped panels
- CNC-routed shapes and cut-outs
- Drilled holes and fixing details
- Polished or finished edges

Available sheet dimensions and thicknesses vary between PERSPEX® grades. Standard clear cast sheets may be available in formats up to 3050 × 2030 mm, while specialist colours and finishes may have different size limitations.
Send us your drawing, dimensions, thickness, colour and quantity, and our team can recommend the most suitable supply and fabrication option.
There is no single minimum order quantity covering the entire PERSPEX® range. The MOQ depends on the product, colour, thickness and current availability.
- Stocked sheets may be available as a full sheet or an individual cut-to-size panel.
- Non-stock colours, finishes or thicknesses may require a full-sheet or supplier-pack purchase.
- Specialist and made-to-order grades may be subject to a manufacturer’s production-run MOQ.
- Bespoke colour matching normally requires a project-specific minimum quantity and additional lead time.
Altius Polymers will confirm the applicable MOQ, price and lead time before you place an order.
The PERSPEX® range includes hundreds of colours, finishes and specialist grades, so not every option may be displayed online.
If you cannot find your required product, contact Altius Polymers with the colour or product code, thickness, panel size, quantity and intended application.
