Frequently Asked Questions
Oil-filled cast nylon is a PA6G cast nylon containing a liquid lubricant distributed throughout the polymer.
Unlike a temporary surface coating, the lubricant is incorporated into the material during manufacture. It helps reduce friction, stick-slip and wear over the component’s working life.
Its principal advantage is improved sliding and bearing performance. It may provide:
- Lower friction than standard cast nylon
- Reduced stick-slip
- Smoother and quieter movement
- Improved wear resistance
- Reduced dependence on external lubrication
- Good load-bearing and impact performance
- Protection where regular lubrication is difficult
It should not automatically be described as “maintenance free.” Load, speed, shaft material, temperature and contamination still determine whether supplementary lubrication is needed.
Röchling describes Sustamid 6G OL as cast PA6 containing a finely and homogeneously distributed liquid lubricant. Röchling Sustamid 6G OL
Typical applications include:
- Bearings and bushes
- Slide pads and wear plates
- Conveyor guides
- Sheaves and pulleys
- Gears and sprockets
- Telescopic-boom wear pads
- Packaging and materials-handling machinery
- Mining and lifting equipment
- Components operating where external lubrication is undesirable
Yes. It machines well using conventional CNC equipment. Sharp tools, secure support and suitable chip control should be used.
The lubricant may leave the machined surface slightly oily, so components should be cleaned before inspection, assembly or marking.
Oil-filled cast nylon is normally machined rather than hot or cold bent.
Welding and adhesive bonding are difficult because lubricant can migrate to the surface and interfere with adhesion. Mechanical fastening is normally preferred.
Printing is possible only after thorough degreasing and surface preparation, and adhesion may still be less reliable than on standard cast nylon. A sample test is strongly recommended.
- Dimensional stability: Better than many soft bearing materials, but it still absorbs moisture and changes dimensions.
- Mechanical: Good toughness, fatigue resistance, impact absorption and load capacity.
- Tribological: Lower friction and reduced stick-slip compared with standard cast nylon.
- Chemical: Generally resistant to oils, greases, fuels and mild alkalis; strong acids and oxidisers require checking.
- Fire: Standard oil-filled nylon is not automatically flame retardant. Fire performance must be confirmed from the exact data sheet.
- Electrical: Normally insulating when dry, although moisture and lubricant additives can change electrical performance.
Green is widely associated with oil-filled cast nylon. Natural and black grades are also available from some manufacturers. Colour does not by itself confirm the lubricant formulation or performance.
Yes. Sheet, rod, tube, rings, discs, blocks and machined components can be supplied.
One cut piece may be possible from stocked material. Special casting dimensions, custom colours or non-standard lubricant formulations normally require a factory minimum order and manufacturing lead time.
